MIS 587 - Blog 2

Module 1 of MIS 587 covered topics in big data, data warehouse design, balanced scorecards, star schemas, dimensional modeling, and dashboarding design for business intelligence.

The Balanced Scorecard

The balanced scorecard is a powerful tool organizations can use to measure performance with KPIs (key performance indicators), particularly in 4 areas: Financial, Customer, Internal Business Processes, and Learning and Growth. The balance scorecard seeks to answer different questions in these categories, links organizational goals to the overall strategy, and also maps goals relevant to those KPIs and metrics.

Dashboarding Design for Data Analysis

A dashboard is a visual interface, usual using graphics to represent data. It can be a very helpful tool in informing businesses and presenting information analysis. They typically are quantitative measures of performance, such as how well an organization is performing in the market, or information such as sales over time, units sold, customer satisfaction, etc. Additionally, it is important that dashboards indicate a baseline, as to let the audience understand the measurements with respect to the original baseline.

Reflection

It was interesting to learn about these tools and how they are valuable tools for organizations and their usecases in business intelligence. While both dashboarding and balanced scorecards are used in different situations and for different reasons, I found they are vital to helping modern organizations map their goals as a business to their overall strategy and are also helpful in conveying substantial amounts of information in a format that is easily understood. I particular enjoyed working on Assignment 2, which covered dashboard design in tableau. It was a fascinating assignment, as we took on the role of a consultant to help the FAA with their data from bird strikes in the United States. This assignment challenged the student to use the data presented to them and transform it into something useful that an organization can use. Overall, after now being introduced to Tableau, I'd love to learn how to improve my skills and create even more compelling dashboard designs.

  1. Hello Matthew!
Nice summary and reflection! I also had fun in this module. It was my first time learning about balance score cards and Tableau. I agree with you that Assignment 2 was fascinating. I've seen other companies use Tableau for data such as displaying Covid-19 dashboards, but I never got to use it before. It was fun getting to see data turn into something visual and colorful and of course useful.

    Best,
    Elyssa
